Midtown Penthouse

Two households merged when a New York fashion magazine editor married an actress and model who had been living in the Hollywood Hills. Their penthouse naturally commands great skyline views, but we needed to tame the sprawling, irregularly shaped main room. We created a welcoming furniture plan that defines three seating areas for entertaining, dining, and relaxing by oneself or with guests.

The client’s collection of black-and-white photography, vintage furniture, and organic elements reflect the strong East and West coast styles. To capture that energy and focus the effects, we employed high-contrast patterns and color to play off calm neutral main pieces, featuring a 1970s-inspired palette of earth tones—avocado, orange, and brown. The design manages color in a way that is engaging yet timeless. Select furnishings round out the client’s existing effects to create the overall sense of a collection.
